The Commons: Sharing Public Spaces
The North Van Urban Forum is embarking on an exploration of space: public space that is. The shared urban landscape within which the many and disparate narratives of our community are played out. An environment that is shaped by, and, in turn, has a hand in shaping the dominant ideologies and power relations of our society.
In light of the fundamental ways in which shared urban space underpins civic life, we would like to invite those diverse groups who embody the public to join us in this exploration. Embedded within a larger public visioning and design process for a yet undeveloped piece of North Vancouver waterfront, this exploration is intended to inform, engage, and energize the public about public spaces, how these spaces shape our lives, and what power and agency they have in shaping the landscapes we inhabit.
Between January 12 and 21, the gallery space of Cafe For Contemporary Art (140 East Esplanade, North Vancouver) is open to the public; discussion-sparking blurbs and post-it notes for dialogue will be provided, and installations or print-outs from the public are encouraged. The many and disparate public voices mobilised through this process will coalesce on the 19th, when a discussion session will be held between 7-9pm.
We hope to see you all there!
