Project Waterfront: The Conclusion of The North Van Design Jam

Since the North Van Urban Forum‘s inception, our goal has always been to build a community dialogue, and to encourage participation from all walks of life in the development of the public realm.  We believe that democracy does not end at the polling booth, but that everybody, regardless of their position, age, background or political persuasion, has a valuable voice to contribute to the public conversation about what we want our world to look like.

On October 4th, to much fanfare, the North Van Urban Forum launched “Project Waterfront: North Van Design Jam”, a series of events revolving around the concept of a community design competition to generate ideas and visuals for the development of Lot 5, on the North Van Central Waterfront.  Lot 5 is a piece of publicly owned land at the heart of this vibrant community: undeveloped; brimming with historical and emotional resonance to the community; bursting with the potential to be the jewel of the North Shore and the lower Mainland.  We want the development of our waterfront to be a transparent, inclusive, community oriented process.  We want North Van’s citizens to be proactive, and involved in the creative process, not forever reactive.  We want the community to be an integral part of the conversation!

On Thursday November 29th we will be concluding the North Van Design Jam (but not the community conversation!) with a fabulous event at the Café for Contemporary Art, starting at 7pm.  Our key-note address is being presented by world renowned blogger and urban designer Gordon Price, director of the City Program at Simon Fraser University.  Beer is very generously being supplied by the North Shore’s own Bridge Brewing Company.  Design Jam submissions are being supplied by you, and judged by our prestigious panel of judges.

Don’t forget, it’s not too late to submit an entry!  Submissions close November 22nd.  Check out our competition site for details.  The format can be as simple or as detailed as you like, but have your say!

Come along on November 29th and join in the dialogue, and be on hand as we unveil the winners of the North Van Design Jam!  We look forward to seeing you there!
